Scottish Add Half Mail Tax Marks

This website provides an online handbook and guide for collectors of the Scottish Additional Halfpenny Mail tax hand stamps in use from 1813 - 1839.

Designed and written by David Druett

These markings have fascinated collectors of British postal history for many years.  The only written handbook, 'The Scottish Additional Halfpenny Mail Tax' by Ken Hodgson and Bill Sedgewick, on the subject is long out of print and sadly neither of the authors is still alive.

Canonbie, Denny and Kinghorn added at last but still a few offices missing.

Listings for Scottish Offices now completed.  Please let me know of any corrections or additions.

This work is not finished.  Still most of the English Offices and much else to include.

I am keen to hear from fellow collectors who can improve these listings whether it be a date extension or a previously unrecorded example of one of the scarcer marks.

 Introduction

I started collecting these markings as a young schoolboy.  I regularly attended the Yorkshire Philatelic Association conventions and also the annual York racecourse stamp shows and became friends with Ken Hodgson and Bill Sedgewick.  They encouraged me to collect these markings and spent considerable time teaching me the rudiments of the study of postal history.  At the age of sixteen I entered an exhibit of Scottish Add ½'s at Stampex and was rewarded with a bronze medal which still remains my only philatelic achievement to date
